Description of the research topic:

Our goal is to have a biochemical model system available that enables the assessment of the digestive and physiological effects of different feed components, bioactive active ingredients and nutrients, the comparative evaluation of bioavailability, and the determination of the degree of utilization, with particular regard to protein maintenance and immune-boosting functions, on antioxidants, micronutrients and gut microbiota.
In the course of our work, we develop an automated in vitro digestion model based on the parallel examination of samples supported physico-chemical processes and optimized for the digestive characteristics of humans and monogastric farm animals.
A sequential, four-step (mouth, stomach, small intestine and large intestine) digestive model system capable of simulating the entire human and pig gastrointestinal system will be created using 16 enzymes and cofactors.
Factors capable of positively influencing the composition of the intestinal microbiota are studied using culture and molecular biological methods, thus opening up a way to compare the functioning of the human and pig intestinal microbiota systems, and to develop a system based on tissue culture that simulates the processes of absorption.
In summary, we are building a complex in vitro digestion model system that is suitable for evaluating the biological utilization, stability and actual physiological activity of individual components, active ingredients and products.
