Description of the research topic:

As Clark Kerr, a well-known higher education researcher and institution leader has noted, "About eightyfive institutions in the Western world established by 1520 still exist in recognisable forms, with similar functions and with unbroken histories, including the Catholic church, the Parliaments of the Isle of Man, of Iceland, and of Great Britain, several Swiss cantons, and seventy universities." (Kerr [1982] 152-153).
Higher education institutions are exceptional organisations. Their long history, specific profile, and culture of expertise give rise to various unique organisational arrangements. At the same time, in recent decades, there has been increasing pressure on institutions to adopt business best practices. In recent years, such processes have been taking place abroad and in Hungary (for example, the recent transformation of public institutions into private ones).
The doctoral thesis can examine management issues and controversies in higher education institutions in one or more areas. These include governance of higher education institutions, funding, HR practices, changing identity of academics, teaching and research management, the third mission in universities, organisational culture in higher education, managerialism etc.
Research can be conducted from a range of organisational theories, e.g. neo-institutionalism, critical theories, classical functional theories, etc.
