Description of the research topic:
Prevalence of obesity and associated comorbidities i.e. insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus are exponentially increasing; therefore, investigating carbohydrate and lipid metabolism processes and their relationship with markers of cellular senescence have a high impact. Organokines are the remarkably players in the crosstalk between the cells via endocrine, paracrine and autocrine manner. Due to the pleiotropic effects, organokines are also promising biomarkers and mediators of obesity-related cellular senescence, aging and impaired pancreatic β-cell function. We aim to study the putative associations between organokine pattern (meteorin-like (Metrnl), kallistatin, betatrophin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3)), oxidative stress markers (paraoxonase-1 activity, nitrogen-monoxide and oxidized LDL levels), lipid metabolism and nutritional status in obese individuals. We also investigate the relationship between circulating PAI-1 levels the components of metabolic syndrome in subjects with distinct genotypes in the PAI-1 -675 4G/5G polymorphism dependent manner.
