Description of the research topic:
The alternation of often lyrical high-style passages with sarcastic parts in the lower style is an important feature of a large number of French novels, beginning with Stendhal and Balzac, but especially since Flaubert. This contrapuntal structure continues to play a fundamental role in contemporary French novel, including Michel Houellebecque’s novels which are polyphonic in the Bakhtinian sense of the term and put the question of the author's intention, which was believed to be already outdated, again on the agenda.
