Description of the research topic:

Scientific problem*
River management is undergoing a paradigm shift today: the need to reduce unwanted environmental impacts caused by centuries-old river regulation methods, which were previously widely accepted, is in line with the objectives of the relevant European Union directives to make the ecosystems of our watercourses more natural. Based on these principles, the methodological renewal of the principles and planning procedures of river regulation is an urgent, not yet fully understood task, which provides several basic and applied research areas by exploiting novel technologies, measurement and modelling methods offered by technological development.
Extremes are becoming more frequent on our rivers. Similarly to the study of flood waves, we also have to deal with the increasingly frequent low-water periods, since in some water uses and from an ecological point of view, persistently low water levels can cause serious problems. Within the framework of the morphological characterization of alluvial rivers, especially regulated river sections burdened by human water use, morphological and morphodynamic exploration of not only the main bed but also the floodplains of rivers arises. A prerequisite for this is to get to know the processes related to sediment transport and to clarify their measurement procedures. The determination of the amount of rolled sediment in rivers and the technique of measurements underlying the characterization of rolled sediment transport are a problem worldwide, so it is necessary to define methodological recommendations with which rolled sediment measurement can be refined. The comparison of the measurement methods of suspended sediment transport and the possibilities of continuous measurement/data collection should also be examined.
The morphological problems related to sediment transport processes are mainly manifested in the filling of floodplains and the erosion of the main bed. In the former respect, it is necessary to examine the replenishment of river backwaters and floodplains (floodplains), primarily in the context of sediment transported by rivers and floodplain land use (vegetation cover), while the latter issue foresees the estimation and prognostication of bed subsidence, which is partly reflected in possible trending changes in low and medium water levels, such as the practical application of hydrological statistical methods and their methodological It also requires its development and further development.
