THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: National University of Public Service, Budapest
military engineering
Doctoral School of Military Engineering

Thesis supervisor: György Kende
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Doctoral School of Military Engineering
Abbreviation of location of studies: DSME

Description of the research topic:

Justification of the research topic:
(Precedents, actuality, etc.)
In the past many significant development and scientific results has been achieved within the R&D area in Hungary. Joining NATO and the EU has changed the environment of domestic R&D activities. The need for modernization of the Hungarian Armed Forces makes neccessary the adaptation of presently used R&D methods and processes to the new political end economic environment. This adaptation and up-to-date research methods gives the possibility to reach new scientific results in the R&D area. Results of foreign countries and generalization of experiences are valuable as well.

Objectives:
Identifying doctoral (PhD) research areas which meets the ideas written down in the above (Justification) part. This areas may be very different and comprehensive – R&D methodology, specific projects leading to new results, international cooperation, etc. The common goal is to prove the ability of the PhD candidate to comprehend a topic, to properly handle the sources, and to achieve and formulate new scientific results. Research areas in military technology are very wide, consequently, the PhD student is free to choose any topic relevant to R&D. Research objectives have to be clearly formulated in order to find scientific results which must either mirror the development achievements or to draft further research goals. Results must have significance in international R&D community, and have to be published in periodicals. All in all, research objectives must aim to development results in military technology, to find relationship between R&D and connecting areas and/or to increase effectiveness of related R&D activities.
Research objectives related to development of equipment or system, or system of systems may vary to meet the specific goals of individual countries regardless they are NATO members or not. General and comprehensive objectives may be aimed to: international cooperation, NATO programs in military technology R&D, cooperation with industrial and academia sphera, acquisition and R&D, best practices of education of R§D personnel in colleges and universities.

Research methods
Methods must vary according to research objectives (in case of specific projects methods may be: laboratory and field experiments, modern data processing methods, etc.) Comprehensive and analytical studies frequently demand usage of information technology (Internet) along with classical methods. The most important thing is to find effective methods relevant to the choosen topic and wide usage of possibilities of international cooperation.

New scientific result to be achieved:

New results are the consequence of proper formulating of research objectives, relevant methods used, and deep study of the topic. The characteristics of new results must be in connection with new technologies, methods and procedures in military technology R&D. Results may designate or indicate new directions, describe further research areas, or contribute to development activities aiming to create new military equipment or systems.
