Abbreviation of location of studies: DSME

Description of the research topic:

Nowadays, the vast majority of today used aircraft are equipped with gas turbine engines. Examining the combustion products of burning kerosene, carbon dioxide and water is an inevitable consequence of combustion. These emissions per kilogram of burnt fuel cannot be reduced. The only way of reduction is less fuel consumption by more economical engines, aerodynamically better airframe, wing design, traffic management optimisation, or alternative fuels. Other pollutants, NOx, CO, unburned fuel and soot are heavily dependent on the design of combustor and the quality of combustion. The greatest challenge of the 21st century, the climate change, makes increasingly urgent to reduce emissions, not just for commercial aviation, but also in the field of military aviation, with particular regard to carbon dioxide emissions.
Research objectives:
Climate change and the depletion of fossil fuel reserve raise major problems. In this respect, research for using alternative fuels has been started in the 1980s, but this trend has only become matured today. The main objective is to utilize advanced computer support to help us understand and analyze complex processes such as the operation of gas turbine engines and flow phenomenon in each of its component. With the application of results, to find new solutions for more economical, environmentally friendly operation of engines.
New scientific result to be achieved:
Modelling the engines, we have preliminary information on what we can expect using different alternative fuels regarding the operation real engines. Developing new operational and service processes for more economical, environmentally friendly operation.
