Description of the research topic:

In Hungary, life expectancy has increased over the last two decades from 71.9 years in 2000 to 75.7 years in 2020 but is still well below the EU average (80.6 years). The WHO Global Monitoring Framework for NCDs has set an overall target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from the four major noncommunicable disease groups (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases) by 2025 (25by25). Premature mortality from cardiometabolic disease (CVD) in the Hungarian population is significantly lower than the EU average. Among CVDs, ischaemic heart disease and stroke are particularly important, accounting for one in three recorded deaths. In addition to known lifestyle factors (smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet, alcohol consumption) and environmental factors (air pollution), cardiovascular risk is strongly influenced by genetic background. Our aim is to identify the genetic factors underlying cardiovascular disease and to estimate their importance for the Hungarian population.
