Possible topics include: theories of political authority and power, instrumental (e.g., Raz) and procedural (e.g., Waldron); political obligation and philosophical anarchism; theories of legitimacy (e.g., Buchanan, Klosko, Sangiovanni, Simmons); democratic theory: justifications and values of democracy; majority rule, the right to vote and to run for office (e.g., Waldron); democracy and political equality (e.g., Beitz, Christiano), democracy and social equality (e.g., Kolodny, Viehoff, Wilson), epistemic democracy (e.g., Estlund, Peter, Landemore); deliberative conceptions of democracy (e.g., Cohen, Fishkin, Guttman, Young), instrumental and minimalist theories of democracy (e.g., Arneson, Schumpeter), pragmatism and democracy (e.g., Dewey, Talisse), sortition v. election-based representation; constitutional constraints and democracy; theories of civil disobedience, revolution and other forms of resistance; normative issues in democratic transitions; the political economy of democracy and theories of radical democracies; the political philosophy of the European Union.
