Description of the research topic:

Introduction: Tumor proliferation and propagation can be very different among patients even in the same disease stage. Identifying factors behind these differences may help to estimate the survival and the prognosis of the disease more accurately, furthermore it may help the treatment and possibly the prevention and early detection of the disease as well. Over the last few years the etiologic role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has emerged regarding various malignant tumors. It has become evidence for certain types of tumors by now (e.g. cervical cancer, head and neck cancers, etc.), while there are other tumors where despite some supporting evidence, this role has not been widely accepted yet. Aims: Our primary aim is to determine the prevalence and the influence on the prognosis of the HPV in different solid organ tumours. We would investigate the predictive value of HPV infection in a retrospective study, in different specimens of patients who underwent operation for malignant tumours at our Department of Surgery over the last 15-20 years. (principally in breast cancer and in HPB maignancies) HPV would be detected by specific immunohistochemistry, by in situ hybridization on specimens stored at the Department of Pathology (University of Pécs, Medical School). The samples that are marked positively would undergo further genotyping and invastigation.
