Description of the research topic:

Migration crisis, including forced migration is one of the most significant global challenges. The Syrian conflict has resulted in the largest refugee crisis since World War II, with almost 5 million refugees fleeing to neighbouring countries, and thousands fleeing towards Europe as long-term settling asylum-seekers. Al-Zaatari camp in Northern Jordan has hosted almost 80.000 Syrian Refugees, and it is the largest Syrian Refugees camp in the world. The needs of refugees have exceeded the camp’s design, forming sanitation problems and making it difficult to get good quality health care, which prioritizes urgent health care needs only. Overall, refugees are the most vulnerable category in a crisis, and as long as this conflict continues in Syria, most refugees cannot return and therefore their health needs are likely to require assistance in the refugee setting. On the other hand, European societies and healthcare providers also need to be more prepared to a potential new wave of refugees from the Middle-Eastern conflict regions.
Ph.D candidate shall design and conduct a research in order to assess the health status of refugees in Jordan, to recognize their health needs and challenges, specifically the prevalence of chronic diseases, communicable diseases, physical injuries, emotional and mental health problems, and barriers to access adequate health care with a special focus on considering the public health consequences of a potential new, increased migration influx of Syrian refugees towards Europe in the future.
