Description of the research topic:

The most commonly used filling material in restorative dentistry is the resin-based dental composite. Although its long-term success is 60-90% according to the literature, disadvantageous properties have to be reckoned which the manufacturers have not been able to eliminate for many decades. To mitigate these disadvantageous properties, such as polymerization shrinkage and consequent marginal gap, insufficient polymerization, and consequent monomer dissolution, the dentist can increase the success of the restoration by choosing the method of use. One such use is to preheat the resin composites in addition to cold compaction, thereby increasing their adaptability and improving the polymerization rate by increasing the mobility of the monomers. In our studies, we would compare the degree of polymerization of conventional composites after preheating with the degree of polymerization of materials at room temperature, as well as with the same values of materials specifically introduced and used for preheating. These measurements would be performed with a micro-Raman spectroscope. A further objective is to investigate the extent of monomer dissolution from samples of the above materials by high performance liquid chromatography. With our measurements, we could provide data on whether preheating with extra equipment requirements and longer chair time really improves the quality of the composites.
