Description of the research topic:

With the dramatic rise and initial success of AI large language models, and the apparent demise of classic theoretical linguistics, especially the Chomskyan biolinguistic paradigm, it is still a valid question to ask: What does human linguistic competence consist in (and of)? How, and to what extent, are general cognitive abilities and skills (such as pattern recognition and inductive reasoning) responsible for enabling humans to produce and decode linguistic forms at various levels? Is there still need, and room, for domain-specific factors in it? Does the impressive performance of modern layered neural networks mean that such domain-specific abilities are not necessary in human speakers either? Doctoral candidates are expected to devise and implement some research program, with an open mind, to seek at least partial answers to these very basic, but very pressing questions.
