Buddhism spread to the area inhabited by the Mongols in more waves (present territory of Mongolia, certain areas of China and Russia). Mongolian Buddhism flourished almost for three centuries from the 17th century during which eminent Mongolian monks wrote several sacred texts both in Tibetan and Mongolian. Besides, Mongolian Buddhism had its special monastic formations, monkhood, and ceremonies. Buddhist practices were revived in Mongolia after 1990, thus the interpretation of sacred texts can be studied both in former and current contexts.
