Description of the research topic:
Melanoma is about 1% of malignant skin cancers, but this type of tumor has the highest mortality rate. Prior to 2011, only chemotherapy and radiation therapy were used to treat metastatic melanoma, but due to the failure of survival, researchers turned their attention to immunotherapy. Due to the rapid development of immunotherapy in recent years, it has now become a mature treatment strategy. It evaluates significant therapeutic success with immunotherapy in several malignancies in which the activated immune system has eliminated the tumor cells. Nowadays, immunotherapy can be used alone or in combination with classical treatments. Today, immunotherapy has become more precise and personalized with fewer side effects. Tumor vaccines are designed to elicit an immune response against tumor-specific or tumor antigens. Several of them are involved in clinical trials for breast, prostate and melanoma. The latest generation of tumor antigens are neoantigens identified from tumor samples. Tumor antigens undergo mutations during tumor development, along with other cell surface samples. These neoantigens can also be used in immunotherapy, which are the first tools for personalized therapy. The first neoantigen-containing vaccine has been approved for prostate cancer, and the number of cancer vaccines in clinical trials has been increasing since then. The aim of this research is to design and synthesize melanoma antigen-based vaccines and to establish relationships between in vitro and in vivo treatments based on relevant functional studies.
