"Our lives are largely shaped by the processes of cultural evolution: social organization, economy, language, fashion, internet usage, and so on. However, cultural evolution is not a characteristic unique to the human species. Socially learned behavioral elements are vital for the survival and reproduction of individuals in many animal species within a given environment. The accumulation of such behavioral elements in a population results in culture, the diversity and stability of which will determine the characteristics of population adaptation. Therefore, it is crucial for us to understand how cultural diversity is created, changed, and evolved, a knowledge that is currently quite limited. Our research group aims to study the processes of cultural evolution in the song of the collared flycatcher. We seek answers to the following questions: Are there learning constraints related to individual quality? How does interaction between two males influence the composition of the song repertoire, and how long does its effect last? Is there a connection between an individual's song and its role in the communication network? How does the temporal and spatial dynamics of networks determine the diversity and stability of culture? We employ two main approaches: field data collection (observation and experimentation) and computer modeling.
