Description of the research topic:
The origin of eukaryotes was a unique major transition where a bacterium endosymbiotically integrated into an archaeal host cell. Mitochondria, the cell nucleus, and phagocytosis all appeared seemingly at the same time. Because of the missing intermediate steps, we do not know the sequence of events. The early partnership was clearly different from the current ATP-based relationship between the mitochondrion and the eukaryotic host, but it is likely that it was based on some shared metabolic product. The aim of the project is to explore this early relationship and to model the eco-evolutionary dynamics of the partners. The central question is whether metabolic relationships based on the sharing of metabolites are stable enough for endosymbiotic integration to develop in the long term. For this, a host-symbiont ecological model must be developed, which can also simulate the increasing genetic dependence of partners.
