Description of the research topic:
"In the Biomolecular Interactions Research group chemists and biologists work together to explore the mechanistic basis of diseases. We focus on cellular functions related to intracellular signaling: how cells process information and how they respond to exctracellular cues. We study the structure and function of key protein-protein complexes containing protein kinases (e.g. involved in cancer and inflammation in mammals). We also study analogous but functionally naturally distinct protein kinase complexes involved in the growth of plant cells and in ther response to biotic or abiotic stress. Depending on the skill set or the interest of the PhD candidate the project requires the use of molecular biology techniques, structure determination of proteins and their complexes, synthesis/testing of small molecules acting on signaling proteins in biochemical or cellular assay, and modeling of their effect on cellular protein networks.
