Description of the research topic:

Laboratory scale experiments will be carried out to gain understanding on the fundamentals a BxR neutralization.
In the course of the execution of this industrially funded project, sufficient body of information is expected to be gained to valorize BxR (e.g., to use it as fertilizer).

The main components of BxR are (i) water, (ii) components, that react with mineral acids (e.g., HCl) with a reasonable rate (i.e., tricalcium-aluminate, katoites, desilication products, CaCO3, NaOH, Na2CO3 and NaAl(OH)4) and (iii) components, that are inert against HCl (i.e., Fe2O3, SiO2, etc.) BxR-s are of variable composition, depending on the bauxite used, the technology employed and a range of other parameters. BxR-s are, in general, contain toxic components to an extent, which is commensurate with those found in various soils. The hardships with the treatment of BxR-s are almost always associated with their high alkalinity: their pH is around 12-13. Therefore the primary expected outcome of the project is a robust technology capable not only of decreasing the pH to 7-8, but also of finding ways of keeping the pH at this range.

During the execution of the project, the various components of the BxR-s will be synthesized in phase pure form, their structure and composition will be accurately determined, and the thermodynamics and kinetics of their reaction with HCl will be studied too. The plant BxR composition will be approached step by step, by using binary, ternary, etc. mixtures (to check possible cross-reactions). The ultimate goal is the development of a computer code, which calculates the amount of HCl to be added to a BxR with known composition, both in terms of the amount of HCl to be added and in terms of the rate of addition
