Description of the research topic:

The territorial level social and economic inequality is one of the basic features of spatial economics. There are not two points in the space, which have the same characteristics because their economic, social, and cultural parameters are different. As a result of this, in a shorter or longer term, significant differences may develop within countries or regions. The examination of territorial inequalities is a significant issue, with special regards to the spatial convergence processes. The reduction of territorial disparities and the issue of regional convergence have been a priority in the European Union since the 1970s.
The aim of the research topic is the examination of the following main subject areas:
 examination of the regional inequalities in the European Union (analysis of spatial and temporal processes)
 analysis of the convergence processes in Central and Eastern Europe, identification of peripheral areas
 spatial autocorrelation and the role of neighbourhood effects (global and local spatial autocorrelation)
 measurement of the different types of convergence analysis (sigma, beta and gamma convergence, spatial beta convergence/spatial regression)
 smart cities’ performance measurability, as a novel, local type of territorial differences
The application of several methods/indicators can be justified in the analyses, which are partly related to the measurement of territorial inequalities (inequality indices: Hoover index, Dual indicator, GINI coefficient), partly to statistical methods (regression analysis, factor analysis) and partly to the methods of spatial econometrics (global and local Moran index, local Geary index, spatially lagged regression models).
