Description of the research topic:

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important greenhouse gas and takes part in stratospheric ozone depletion. Agriculture, especially the fertilized soils are the major sources of the N2O, accounting for an estimated 69% of the anthropogenic atmospheric load. Production of N2O is predominantly biological and occurs via nitrification, denitrification and nitrifier denitrification. Globally, approx. 50% of the applied nitrogen fertilizers is assimilated by plants, and a significant part of the loss is emitted into the atmosphere, in the form of nitrous oxide. The investigation of this process goes back several decades. Nevertheless, many unsolved questions remain. For mitigation, it is necessary to quantify the sources of N2O. For this purpose, various ecological models have been developed, which can be used to simulate the soil emission of N2O. Direct flux measurements are also required for the calibration and validation of the models.
The aim of the PhD work is to review the ecological models in the literature and to select, adapt and apply the model(s) most applicable to local conditions for selected agricultural fields based on crop rotation, with application of synthetic fertilizers and manure. The model will be validated by direct N2O flux measurements using the photoacoustic method, with the eddy accumulation or eddy covariance techniques. Ecological models are usually also suitable for modelling the cycle of other gases (e.g. CO2, NH3, N2), which may result in a secondary yield of the work.
