Description of the research topic:

Mycotoxins are by-products of filamentous molds/fungi that contaminate cereal-based foods and feeds with significant frequency. As cereals are not only a component of human food but also that of animal feeds, the mycotoxin effect in the body through feeding can efficiently model the human mycotoxin mode of action. Among the model animals, we plan to study rats in the frame of this topic, the planned mycotoxin is fumonisin B1, and the organs to be examined are the liver, the kidneys, and other unspecified splanchnic organs. In the frame of the planned experiments, we aim to determine which lipid type or lipid fraction is affected by fumonisin B1 in each organ, in order to provide a kind of approximation to the organ-specific effect of the toxin. In addition, the expression of genes regulating not only metabolites but also enzymes involved in metabolism will be determined. With this more complex approach, we plan to understand in more detail the anomaly of effects of mycotoxins that sometimes seems to be paradoxical.
