Description of the research topic:

According to McKinsey, as many as one in 16 workers may have to change their chosen occupation by 2030, amounting to more than 100 million workers. Following the pandemic, we see companies diverging with some enforcing a return to work, whilst others continue with hybrid or remote work.

With an ageing population, many countries see a talent shortage by 2030 and coupled with job growth being more concentrated on high-skill jobs (e.g., STEM fields), low-skilled jobs are going to decline. Consider this alongside the advent and growth of AI usage and associated organizational tools such as the Microsoft Copilot for Teams, and the fast adoption of digital technologies. These all raise questions about the future of work.

Finally, we also see new approaches in management, with companies such as Amazon leaning towards scientific management with their use of Smart Watches to monitor every employee’s movement, the rise and fall of holocracies (e.g., Zappos), and increasing complexity in management, such as due to the rise of subcultures, remote / hybrid work, managing dynamic changes and rapid technological change. In the midst of all this (and more), what is the future of work and what is the role of the manager (and the follower)? Where does the employee fit into this picture? Which trends will be followed, and which will become obsolete?
