Description of the research topic:

This research topic is situated at the intersection of education and digital transformation, with a particular focus on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The education sector is currently grappling with numerous challenges and trends, many of which are highlighted in the latest version of OECD’s Trends Shaping Education (OECD, 2022). These challenges are closely tied to the digital transformation that is reshaping our world.
The rapid advancement of digital technologies has brought about new issues, including the potential to exacerbate existing inequalities, referred to as the digital divide (Hargittai, 2021). AI stands at the forefront of these key technologies, with significant implications for the future of education. The recent Horizon Report on teaching and learning (Pelletier et al., 2022) identifies AI tools as pivotal in shaping educational landscapes.
However, despite its potential, there are still many hurdles to overcome in integrating AI into educational institutions. These include policy communication, infrastructure, pedagogy, content delivery, and most notably, a lack of skills to use AI (HolonIQ Education Intelligence Unit, 2023).
This research project aims to bridge the gap between AI innovation and its educational application (Zhang & Aslan, 2021). By integrating an innovation theory and technology integration perspective embedded in pedagogical consideration, we seek to strengthen AI in Education (AIED) research from an educational perspective.
The broad research question that this project contributes to is exploring how educational systems adapt to external factors like digital transformation or, more specifically, the rapid development of artificial intelligence solutions. Higher education provides a rich field for exploring this phenomenon. Potential candidates are encouraged to tailor the topic to their specific interests (e.g., teacher education, policy analysis, pedagogical innovation, technology integration, organizational change, faculty development, quality assurance, pedagogical planning etc.).

The topic belongs to the Adult Learning and Education and the Teacher Education and Higher Education Studies (EDiTE) doctoral programs.
