Inequalities in human capital formation and returns to education (quantitative research using secondary data)

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest

Doctoral School of Education

Thesis supervisor: Anna Adamecz
co-supervisor: Krisztián Széll
Location of studies (in Hungarian): ELTE PPK NDI
Abbreviation of location of studies: NDI

Description of the research topic:

This topic would allow a doctoral student to explore gender and/or socioeconomic inequalities in education either in terms of access to educational resources or in terms of returns to education, using state-of-the-art econometric methods and secondary microdata. Research questions could include, for example, why women are more likely to go to university than men; intergenerational educational mobility; gender and SES gaps in educational outcomes, returns to graduation, etc. Depending on the research question, I could either help the applicant to get access to Hungarian microdata (this would only work for those who speak at least some Hungarian) or suggest easily available international databases (UK cohort studies, PISA, PIAAC, TIMMS, etc.). I would also be happy to supervise someone who has access to microdata from their country of origin and/or who has an original research question related to the broad topic of human capital accumulation or returns to education. Besides supervision, for the right candidate, I offer to share my international network of academic and policy-focused researchers and the possibility of writing co-authored publications.

The topic belongs to the Adult Learning and Education and the Culture, Diversity and Education doctoral programs.
