Description of the research topic:

The history of technical media conceals many practical lessons for artists using contemporary digital technology. Obsolete technologies, technical solutions surmounting their imaginary or real disabilities, can provide ideas that extend today's imaging methods.

Whether it's the recent analog video technology or the XIX. century photography, the study of the technical devices and processes could be used as a starting point for building new innovative artworks. Research into the history and pre-history of technical media can go beyond discovering re-thinkable / recyclable secret workshop-knowledge; in the course of his studies, the artist can gain inspiration to help orientate in the present. Today's technology will be obsolete in the very near future, and the untapped potential inherent in it will be lost forever. One of the most important tasks of an artist experimenting with digital media is to reduce the number of lost opportunities; the study of the technology's history and media archaeology is a plausible starting point to do so.
