Location of studies (in Hungarian): BME Department of Building Services and Process Engineering
Abbreviation of location of studies: ÉPGET

Description of the research topic:

a.) Preliminaries:

A fundamental aspect of the energy performance assessment of buildings is the identification of measures to reduce energy consumption, the quantification of cost savings and calculation of payback periods. In many cases, the implementation of measures is not justified on purely economic grounds, resulting in the non-implementation of measures, in which case investments can be encouraged based on non-energy benefits.

b.) Aim of research:

The primary objective of the research is to map the literature on non-energy benefits associated with energy efficiency measures and to identify the main indicators. After categorising the indicators identified, it is necessary to quantify and systematise the main indicators and implement them in the building audit process.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:

Literature review to identify indicators of non-energy benefits related to energy efficiency measures (0.5 years)
Investigate the possibility of quantifying the indicators (0.5 years)
Contacting companies subject to audit, carrying out questionnaire survey, evaluation of questionnaire results (0.5 years)
Identification of key indicators based on literature research and questionnaires, development of a quantification method (1 year)
Testing the indicator system on real buildings, feedback of experience (0.5 years)
Investigate the possibility of using the indicators in energy audits, propose their inclusion (0.5 years)

d.) Required equipment:

The research is not equipment-intensive and any equipment needed is available in the department. The necessary questionnaire surveys will be covered by the KNOWNnNEBs project, funded by the EU LIFE programme and running until the end of 2025.

e.) Expected scientific results:

1) Development of a conceptual framework for a system of indicators of non-energy benefits linked to energy efficiency measures and the associated evaluation methodology.
2) Evaluation, quantification and testing of the defined indicators.
3) Establishing the basis for the industrial applicability of the results, testing their integration into the energy auditing framework and, if possible, implementing them.
