Description of the research topic:

Each economic crisis presents exciting research opportunities for researchers. Several national and international publications examined the impact of different economic crises at the macroeconomic level or modelled the long-term effect or compared firm-level data across industries.

The aim of this topic is to discuss the crisis and the economic recovery programmes in the Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia) and the European Union. In a crisis, governments introduce various stimulus programmes to maintain stable and long-term business viability. The research will provide a comparative analysis of the different recovery programmes implemented in the EU countries and analyse their direct and indirect impact on the financial situation of companies (profitability, liquidity, capital position, etc.) by company size and industry.

At the onset of the crisis, the first research attempts make predictions, formulate expectations and provide recommendations based on the experience of previous crises. The effects of the crisis can be empirically analysed based on corporate financial data (ORBIS database). Methodological options: systematic literature review, cluster analysis, factor analysis, descriptive statistics of financial data, two-sample Wilcoxon rank sum test (Mann-Whitney) and regression analysis to assess the effects and to make comparisons across countries, industries, and years. It is crucial to examine and evaluate the stimulus and credit programmes at the firm level and to compare firm performances at the industry level.

The research results are embedded in an empirical assessment of the impact of the crisis and related government decisions at the firm level. This will allow us to make recommendations to policymakers on how to deal with crises and how to make policies more effective.
