Effect of recoating in damaged parts

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: Budapest University of Technology and Economics
mechanical engineering
Géza Pattantyús-Ábrahám Doctoral School of Mechanical Engineering

Thesis supervisor: Dorina Kovács
Location of studies (in Hungarian): Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Abbreviation of location of studies: ATT

Description of the research topic:

a.) Preliminaries:

Surface treatments are important technologies in different areas of industrial parts. Coatings and diffusion layers can also improve the surface hardness, wear and corrosion resistance. In laboratory circumstances, a few topics of these treatments (especially carburizing, nitriding and their variant) was researched in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In this topic, the research can be related to industrial use.

b.) Aim of research:

The aim of the research is to analyze the damage of the coated parts and then give a solution for the recoating without manufacturing a new one. To find an answer, it is possible or not which reparation techniques could be usable with surface treatments.

c.) Tasks, main items, necessary time:

Literature review on surface treatments and re-surface treatment techniques. Find and carry out damaged surface treated parts (with wear, cracks, breaks) and analyze the cause of the damage (1-2. semester). Figure out the reparation and carry out the experiments of recoating (2-4. semester). Investigation the effects of the recoating (4-6. semester). Publication of the results in Hungarian and foreign journals domestic and international conferences (3-8. semester). Preparation and submission of the dissertation (6-8. semester)

d.) Required equipment:

The samples and most of the treatments are available from our industrial partners. The equipment for the analysis can be found in the department. Other test methods can be performed in the department's external laboratory.

e.) Expected scientific results:

Understanding the mechanisms of surface treatment in complicated geometries. Find an answer for the existence of recoating considered to be economically relevant.
