Description of the research topic:

Peripheral and central sensitization of the trigeminal pathway plays significant role in the pathophysiology of migraine pain. Activation or sensitization of the trigeminal primary sensory neurons innervating the intra- and extracranial tissues plays central role in both mechanisms. Local inflammatory reactions of the innervated meningeal tissue or systemic conditions e.g. obesity may increase the sensitivity of neurons that may result in an increase of frequency or severity of headache attacks. In our experiments we study in animal models the pathophysiological changes and possible therapeutic interventions that may alter the sensitivity of the trigeminal pathway and have relevance for the treatment of migraine headache.
