Description of the research topic:

The tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to China that has become a worldwide invasive species. Ailanthus altissima is registered as an invasive alien species of European Union since 2019. Ailanthus represses the natural flora and the nature conservation areas in Hungary. Ailanthus damages infrastructures such as railway lines, motorways and buildings as well.

European Union wants to achieve a 50 percent reduction in the amount of pesticides used by 2030.

Instead of chemical plant protection, if possible, it is more appropriate to use biological plant protection.

The aim of the research is to identify and characterize the viruses infecting the tree of heaven, describe the symptoms, and use them as a possible solution in the biological control against the tree of heaven.
