Description of the research topic:
The age of the harvested animals is of crucial importance during trophy evaluation, the result of which may even lead to legal disputes.
The sole evaluation of the external marks of the trophy does not always allow for reliable age determination, however, the study of molecular biomarkers is a potential solution to this problem.
The aim of the research is to select and examine an age-dependent epigenetic marker set (methylation pattern) in deer, which can cost-effectively estimate the age of harvested animals from their antlers in disputed trophy evaluation cases.
The result of the research can not only help to estimate the chronological age but the biological age of deer species as well. This is in connection with the lifespan and individual performance, hence it can lead to more effective epigenetic selection based decisions in the large-scale deer breeding sector in Hungary as well.
