Description of the research topic:

Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in horses which causes poor performance. Initially, it was treated only with pharmacological, then later also with electrical cardioversion with variable outcome. Our aim is that from the recently developed methods for the cessation of pathological impulses originating from the pulmonary veins, we establish the method of the new generation, liquid nitrous oxide cryoballoon ablation in horses. In a previous PhD project, we completed the necessary anatomical, histological and immunohistochemical investigations in a large number of cadaver equine hearts. The proposed PhD topic wish to continue this research project in live horses which are subjects to euthanasia because of an independent cause. During this phase, the technical background of cryoballoon ablation will be developed. The ablation catheter will be introduced under ultrasound guidance through the jugular vein and the cranial vena cava into the right atrium, and then into the left atrium through the interatrial septum to the orifices of the pulmonary veins. The project also includes the accurate determination of the technical parameters of a horse specific cryoablation cardiac catheter. This may make the method suitable for the treatment of clinical cases.
