Description of the research topic:
The possible and impossible sound shapes of words is regulated by phonotactic constraints. It is not enough to specify what sound strings may occur in a given language and what may not, we must also look for reasons of these constraints. Why is it, for example, that usually almost any consonant may occur as the first sound of a word, but the last consonant is often limited to a restricted set.
