Description of the research topic:

The organization of sounds in natural languages are often described and explained by reference to syllable structure. Assuming syllables makes the analysis of numerous phonological phenomena easier (eg stress, phonotactic patterns, the minimal word constraint, etc). However, it is not always clear what belongs to a given syllable and what does not belong to it, and whether syllables map the surface phonetic form or refer to some underling structure of words.
