Description of the research topic:

Allelopathic inhibition of plankic algae by aquatic plants is the second mechanism that able to stabilize the clear-water state. The economic use of allelopathic interactions between macrophytes and algae in aquacultures has not been explored yet. Pistia stratiotes has wide range of allelochemical exudates against unicellular cyanobacteria. However, there is not any field study prove the role of Pistia’s allelochemicals in controlling the growth of eukaryotic algae. Moreover, not a single study dealt with the inhibition attenuation of its allelochemicals in outdoor conditions. Experimental result show that under hypertrophic conditions in duckweed based aquacultures, planktonic and epiphytic algae are also strong competitor of the macrophytes. Controlling algal growth by using the chemical weapon of Pistia could be a possible solution for optimizing the yield production of duckweed based aquaculture. Based on the gap between research results and economic use, the aim of the proposed study is to test the effect of Pistia exudates on several widespread distributed eukaryotic algal species; to determine the inhibition attenuation of allelopatic exudates; to describe how Pistia’s exudates shape the eukaryotic algal assemblage in outdoor condition; to develop an effectively functioning setup that can be used to control algal growth in duckweed based aquacultures.
