Description of the research topic:

In the automotive and airplane industry today, there is a strong trend towards ’drive-by-wire’ or ‘power-by-wire’ technologies, aimed at replacing hydraulic or pneumatic systems with equivalent electrically actuated/powered ones. While nowadays many electrically actuated systems are already in series production, the brake system still represent a major challenge, both because of the high powers involved and the demands of failure management.
The aim of the research is to develop a novel self-reinforcement electromechanical wedge brake that operates around the maximum self-reinforcement point to minimize the actuating forces. Beyond this point, the system would become unstable without any electronic control. Therefore, it is important to research robust control algorithms (sliding mode or H_infinite...) that guarantee the safe operation (stability) of the system against parameter variations.
