Description of the research topic:

"The condition of natural waters is an especially important question among current environmental problems. The natural sedimentation in lakes, rivers and oxbow lakes may lead to silting up with sludge hampering traffic of vessels and may cause destruction of aqueous habitats due to deposition of contaminating heavy metals e.g. Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr as a result of former uncontrolled industrial activity. The cleaning of the bed may be done by regular dredging. The sludge accumulated after dredging frequently has fine grain composition and may contain organic, mineral or contaminating constituents. For this reason the sludge deposited and settled in pools corresponding to current legislations may require further treatment. Such treatment can be recultivation preventing erosion by wind and stabilization of the uppermost layer of the sludge.
Szarvasi-1 energy grass is characterised by considerable tolerance against environmental stresses such as drought, high salinity and alkaline soil pH. In previous research, it has been proved to be resistant to heavy metal (e.g. Zn, Pb, Ni) stress, too, and it has been successfully applied in recultivation projects. Its high biomass yield can be utilized in bioenergy production. Dredging sludge deposits will be phytostabilized by Szarvasi-1 and the process will be aided by various measurements: soil analysis physiological parameters, biomass yield, colonization by mycorrhizal fungi and molecular identification of bacterial communities of the rhisosphere.
