Description of the research topic:

In the new millenium a new class of analytical techniques emerged. They collect a huge amount of data from the sample and lead to analytical conclusions using pattern recognition methods applied to these data fields. At the same time we can observe a continuously increasing demand to obtain analytical data from samples that were collected by the least possible invasive means, underwent the simplest possible sample preparation procedures. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy based metabolomic analysis meets all these criteria. The aim of the project is finding statistically significant differences between the various NMR spectra of blood serum and urine samples of patients compared to samples from healthy volunteers. Such differences can establish a basis for making diagnostic decisions from data obtained from blood serum or urine samples instead of more complicated, more invasive and more uncomfortable methods. Well distinguishable differences can reveal the changes in the underlying metabolic processes. If we can find such differences, the project would continue towards longitudinal studies in order to identify possible predictive biomarkers by NMR metabolomics, in order to lay the basis of possible screening procedures.
