Description of the research topic:

Although the majority of currently applied medicines contain synthetic substances, compounds of natural origin can still play an important role as lead molecules in drug research. Plants, from algae to higher plants are rich sources of pharmacologically active principles, out of which carotenoids are of the utmost importance for our research group.
The aim of this research project is to study the carotenoid content and composition of Hungarian and Transylvanian medicinal plants. Carotenoids will be identified with chromatographic (HPLC-DAD, HPLC-MS) and spectroscopic methods, rarely occurring substances will be isolated and structurally identified.
