Description of the research topic:

One of our current major global challenges is the increasing presence of invasive mosquitoes and the occurrence of the emerging infectious diseases that these species spread. It is well known mosquitos in general are vectors of different pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes), which can have considerable implications for human and animal health. Three invasive species from tropical/subtropical areas of Southeast Asia have appeared in Hungary, and these are capable of spreading a much wider range of pathogens than local species, but little is known about the ecological role they play in the endemic fauna and ecosystem functioning. The Centre for Ecological Research has recently launched a research project that is an important component of the National Laboratory for Health Security, which focuses on the ecological drivers of distribution change as well as the ecological effects of invasive mosquito species with a high emphasis on their role in spreading different pathogens. We are looking for doctoral students, who would like to get involved in this innovative multidisciplinary project. The research activities are diverse, and may include field work (insect trapping), taxonomic identification of species, modern laboratory testing (detection of pathogens in mosquitoes using genetic methods), development and use of web and mobile application interfaces, application of info-graphics and modern statistical techniques, and promotion of conservation implications of the results.
