Description of the research topic:
The polyether ionophore antibiotics disturb the metal ion homeostasis. We study the metal ion complexes of Monensin A. The chirality of the ligand allows for circular dichroism spectroscopic investigations. While Monensin A binds monovalent metal ions in its hydrophilic cavity, the coordination of divalent metal ions to terminal functional groups influences the size of the cavity and thereby, can regulate the ion transport through competition. Salicylic acid derivatives are widely applied in medicine. Their properties can be fine-tuned through metal complex formation. We study their binary and ternary complexes by instrumental analytical methods. The study on interaction of these compounds as well as, (thio)semicarbazone complexes with biological molecules has also been initiated. The investigation of solution equilibria of the above compounds with metal ions will lead to better understanding of their mechanism of action and may contribute to development of new medical procedures.
