Description of the research topic:

Although many elements of pavement structures design have been following mechanical dimensioning principles, empirical principles and solutions still play a decisive role in determining the preferable structure.
However, the recent advances in material science, IT, traffic and meteorological data collection and processing have an impact on the development of pavement design too.
Thus, with increasingly advanced tools, more precise pavement design methods utilising material characteristics can be developed to help manage design tools that allow more sophisticated technical alternatives to be developed or compared, rather than working technical standards.

Subtopics
• Exploring the potential of improving the standard formula of design traffic. (Weighing input data, sensitivity analysis of the applicable relationships, analysis of traffic induced deterioration, especially fatigue.)
• Dimensioning asphalt pavement structures. (Analysis of stresses and deformations in flexible layer structures. Requirements for materials, asphalt mixtures. Dimensioning model)
• Dimensioning concrete pavement structures. (Analysis of stresses and deformations in rigid layer structures. Requirements for materials, concrete mixtures. Study of special technologies: white-topping, composite structures, airport pavements. Dimensioning model)
• Dimensioning existing pavement structures using overlay design methods. (Study of road diagnostic principles and methods in the inspection of the pavement to be reinforced. Mechanical modelling to determine the reinforcement layer needed)
• Innovative pavement structures. (Possible use of secondary materials, industrial by-products, rubble. Dimensioning parameters of noise reduction asphalt and permeable pavement layers.)
