Description of the research topic:

Protoflavonoids represent a rare, naturally occurring group of flavonoid compounds possessing a non-aromatic B-ring. Until now, they have been predominantly investigated for their antitumor effects, in which their characteristic p-quinol dienone moiety containing B-ring plays a key role. Based on our previous studies, semi-synthetic modification of this moiety may reduce/eliminate the cytotoxicity of protoflavonoids, while shifting their bioactivity profile towards other types of pharmacological effects. The PhD topic aims at the preparation and investigation of new, structurally diverse protoflavonoid derivatives with reduced cytotoxicity from their antitumor parent compounds. The objective of this work is to expand the chemical space of protoflavonoids to provide a basis for their in-depth pharmacological studies. Due to the intensive international collaboration, good English language skills are a must.
