Description of the research topic:
In the almost 3000-year-old iron culture of the Carpathian Basin, the indirect method of pig iron based steelmaking has only been used in the last 300 years. Before that, only the so-called direct method existed, and the two processes operated in parallel for about 150 years. During the direct process, the resulting malleable iron bloom with low carbon - according to the theories accepted so far – basically does not enter a liquid state. This process is little known today, but its metallurgical legacy exists and the interdisciplinary international research trend on this field is growing. The aims of the doctoral research are to provide an archaeometallurgical description of the specific details of the technology of the period (charge ratios, material balances, metallurgical processes in the bloomery furnace, thermal conditions and gas atmosphere of the furnace, production efficiency) through theoretical calculations, laboratory tests, smelting experiments in reconstructed bloomery furnaces and related material tests.
