Description of the research topic:

The current challenges of the electricity system include increasing the transmission capacity of network elements while maintaining - and possibly increasing - operational reliability. The completion of the internal electricity market (IEM), the secure transmission of energy generated from renewable sources, and the better use of cross-border capacities can all be achieved by meeting this requirement. Conventional technologies based on static line rating do not allow the development of a flexible transmission network that could meet the long-term challenges set by the European Union. It is necessary to find new solutions that result in a more resilient network than at present through a higher degree of utilization of each network element.

The Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) network management system makes it possible to create an electricity transmission network that meets the aforementioned requirements. There are only pilot solutions for building this technology, but the system participants already recognized its potential. These pilot projects provide an opportunity to refine further the computational methods implemented so far in practice and introduce new, hitherto unapplied methods such as soft computing or probabilistic computational methods.

The research aims to create a system that meets practical requirements and unifies international models from the initial phase - selecting critical spans and sensor locations - to develop an expert system that analyzes the risk of complex, extreme weather conditions. In addition, another goal is to refine the DLR network management process through mathematical and soft computing models, thus creating a system that eases the duty of the system operators.
