Description of the research topic:
Magnesium alloys are gaining an increasing application area due to their extremely low density. However, the extremely intensive and rapid oxidation of magnesium at high temperatures involves limited or expensive use of classical processing techniques. For this reason, it is an important question to use an effective modern metal forming operation, for example, the FALEP process (Friction Assisted Lateral Extrusion Process). The main goal of the research is to investigate in detail the plastic deformation of magnesium and its alloys in conventional and novel severe plastic deformation conditions. In addition to the preparation, deformation, and mechanical testing of samples, microstructure examination (OM, EBSD, XRD) plays an important role in the Ph.D. program. An important question is the temperature limit or temperature range where the deformed structure can be stabilized in specific applications. The heat resistance of deformed magnesium alloys will be tested through the changes in microstructure. The program focuses mainly on laboratory experiments and testing. The task of the program is not only the usual evaluation of the mentioned microstructure testing methods and their results, but also, if necessary, the development of the evaluation method and sample preparation, too.
