Description of the research topic:

The starting materials used in the production of conventional plastics in some cases raise serious health and environmental concerns. Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing problems of our time. For this reason, intensive research and development work is underway to develop environmentally friendly recycling, reprocessing and degradation processes for plastics. The use of biological systems (e.g. microorganisms) could be a feasible solution for the environmentally friendly degradation of plastics. This topic will aim to better understand enzymatic degradation of plastics and to explore new degradation pathways.
