Description of the research topic:
Beside the standard laser excitation methods to initiate photochemical reactions, there are much simpler ones, e.g. spectrophotometers or high intensity UV-Vis lamps. In the first case, the spectrophotometer itself can be used as a detector as well. In the second case, a pH-stat detection technique is suitable to follow the kinetics of the reactions. The resulting kinetic curves can be fitted by appropriate mathematical methods, and the necessary parameters (reaction orders, quantum yields) can be obtained. There are many photochemically active substances for which the photochemical degradation can be induced by a relatively low light intensity in aqueous solutions (e.g. Ce(III)-catalyzed photochemical degradation of water, photoreactions of 1,4-benzoquinones). Our aim is the quantitative kinetic description of such reactions.
