Description of the research topic:

Infections that occur in the wound created by an invasive surgical procedure are referred to as surgical site infections. While the detrimental effects of implants are well known, the process of biofilm formation on orthopaedic hardware is unclear. Biofilm formation is a process whereby microorganisms irreversibly attach to and grow on a surface and produce extracellular polymers that facilitate attachment and matrix formation. Biofilms have great significance for public health, because biofilm-associated microorganisms exhibit dramatically decreased susceptibility to antimicrobial agents.
